How to prepare metal before painting

Learn how to prepare a metal surface before painting it. You will be surprised how little effort it takes to prepare well for a perfect job.

Read on and set yourself up for success by following our simple advice.

Step 1

How to prepare your metal fence, railing, garage door or any other metal surface depends on the status of the metal

Understand that the preparation steps required depend on the state of your metal surface:

New or rusted metal surfaces need little preparation. Use a wire brush or sand paper to remove any flaking paint or rust. This will guarantee perfect adhesion of the metal paint on new metal/rusted metal.

Only heavy rusted surfaces and areas require (some additional) preparation. Use a wire brush to remove the heavy rust, flaking paint and grime from the metal surface. Use sand paper on the heavy rusted areas until the surface looks even.

Step 2

Preparation of new/bare metal

For new bare metal you only need to use a wire brush to roughen the surface. This will guarantee perfect adhesion of the paint on the new metal.

Step 3

Preparation of rusted metal

Application on rusted metal requires in general some light sanding to clean and even the surface.

Wrap the paper around a sanding block and start sanding the surface. Fine sanding paper is perfect for this job since you’re only looking to smooth the metal surface slightly. Make sure to wipe away any dust before moving to the next step.

Tip: if holes on the surface, consider filling the wholes with metal filler before painting

Step 4

Preparation of heavy rusted metal

Heavy rusted metal and areas require more preparation. Use a wire brush to remove rust, flaking paint and grim from the metal surface. Coarse sand paper and probably more effort/ pressure is required to remove the heavy rust. Use sand paper on the heavy rusted areas until the surface looks even. Then, wipe away the dust with a duster or broom. This will remove any lingering dirt leftover. You are now ready to start cleaning your metal.

Step 5

Clean the metal surface

Now you are ready to clean the metal surface to make sure that is ready to be painted

Hammerite Ultima

Hammerite Ultima can be applied directly onto any metal surface – new as well as rusted metal – without the need for a primer. Little preparation is needed for new and rusted metal. Only when heavy rusted ensure the heavy flakes are removed, and you have an even surface to start the paint job.
