Read on and set yourself up for success by following our step by step process to finish the paint job in the most efficient and pleasurable way.

Step 1

Preparation of rusted surface is done

Review your project, you are almost ready to start painting. Just follow a few little steps to clean the metal surface to ensure a smooth and beautiful finish.

Step 2

Cleaning the metal surface

What do you use to clean metal before painting? First fill a bucket warm water and alkaline detergent/ cleaning agent. Basically, use a soapy solution/ cleaning product you normally use to clean and degrease your kitchen sink with. This will remove any grease, dust or fine particles that could have resulted from sanding, ensuring your paint has a sound surface for the paint to stick to.

Dip to towel/sponge in the soapy solution/ cleaning product and wipe the metal surface one section at the time. Leave it to air dry.

Then, using a clean and dry towel, wipe the metal surface to check whether there is any dirt left. If so, those areas will need to be washed again.

Step 3

Masking

Prepare the area, clear away anything that may get in the way and put down a dust sheet.

Start masking. Using masking tape or blue painter’s tape, cover over the areas you do not want to paint/ touch.

Apply masking tape to the horizontal and vertical edges of the wall, paying particular attention to areas you do not want to paint. Depending on your skill level, you might be on the safe side and want to mask all the edges that you risk touching while painting.
